MySQL error 1114: The table is full — diagnose the cause
ERROR 1114: The table is full means that the storage engine cannot add data because a capacity limit has been reached. It does not identify which resource is exhausted. A full disk, an InnoDB tablespace limit and a user-created MEMORY table require different responses.
Reviewed: 27 October 2026. The earlier version of this article recommended increasing memory limits to 256 MB and restarting too quickly. Start with the actual engine, product version and failed operation instead.
When an order could not be saved
Check whether an order or payment already exists before asking a customer to repeat checkout. Preserve the matching log entry and current data. Restoring an old database without reconciling subsequent orders can create a second incident.
For assistance, contact Soban with the symptoms and time of the failure. Do not send database passwords or customer records in the initial message.
Identify the database version and storage locations
Use your authorized administrative account. These queries read metadata; they do not change limits or restart the service:
|
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 |
SELECT VERSION() AS version, @@version_comment AS distribution; SHOW GLOBAL VARIABLES WHERE Variable_name IN ( 'datadir', 'tmpdir', 'tmp_table_size', 'max_heap_table_size', 'internal_tmp_mem_storage_engine', 'temptable_max_ram', 'temptable_max_mmap', 'innodb_data_file_path' ); |
Unsupported variable names are omitted from the result. Settings and behavior differ between MySQL and MariaDB releases. For the table named in the error, inspect its engine and definition; replace both example names:
|
1 2 |
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `shop_db` LIKE 'orders_table'\G SHOW CREATE TABLE `shop_db`.`orders_table`\G |
Check the filesystems containing the actual datadir and tmpdir, not just an unrelated mount:
|
1 2 |
df -hT df -i |
Also check applicable quotas and container limits. Metadata estimates are not a substitute for available space. A permission error while collecting information does not prove corruption.
Choose the correct diagnostic branch
- Disk or tablespace capacity: establish which volume or configured limit is exhausted. Do not manually delete table files, redo/undo files or binary logs.
- User-created MEMORY table:
max_heap_table_sizeis relevant, but changing its global value does not automatically enlarge an existing table. Any rebuild needs an application-aware plan. - Internal temporary table: behavior depends on the version and temporary-table engine. In MySQL 8.4, memory limits can trigger use of disk storage; verify that the disk destination has sufficient space as well.
Why a blanket 256 MB setting is unsafe
A sensible limit depends on the workload, concurrent queries and memory budget. Increasing a per-table or per-session allowance may worsen overall memory pressure. Confirm that the setting controls the failing operation, test a specific change and monitor the result.
Do not restart as the first troubleshooting step: MEMORY table contents do not survive a restart. Deleting rows, truncating a table or rebuilding it is also a data operation, not a harmless way to clear an error.
If replication has stopped
Inspect the replica’s error, affected table and channel. MySQL 8.4 provides SHOW REPLICA STATUS; use the documented syntax for your actual product and release. The source and replica may have different resource constraints.
Do not skip replication events merely to hide error 1114. Once the cause is resolved, the administrator should resume the appropriate channel deliberately, then verify progress and data consistency. This article does not prescribe an automatic restart or replication reset.
Before closing the incident
Confirm that the original operation succeeds, check for duplicate or incomplete business records and observe storage and error trends. Record what changed and how it can be reversed. A missing error message alone does not establish that all affected orders are correct.
